The
Film Industry
The
film distribution industry has seen tremendous growth in the last decade. The total
domestic film box office has grown steadily from $4.8 billion in 1992 to $9.5 billion
in 2003, growing by over 95
percent in the last decade. In the last ten
years, film admissions increased 40 percent or 466 million in the U.S.
However,
in 2005 domestic box office began to slow with several weeks below
year-to-year figures. This recent downturn correlates with the continuing
consolidation of the US film distribution business, culminating with the
purchase of MGM by Sony Pictures in early 2005.
Over-consolidation
and a failure to adopt new film distribution technology has made today's media giants unable
to deliver quality movies. Veronika Kwan-Rubinek, president of
international film distribution for Warner Bros. admitted that the slump is
"Primarily product related." Confirming this view, a June 2005
AP/AOL poll showed that half of all respondents believed that Hollywood
film and movies are
getting worse.
The
recent downturn signifies the inability of media conglomerates to adjust to
the new film technological landscape. MAGNEPIX Distribution is revitalizing the American film business, providing a rich variety of
US and foreign films, delivered through a state-of-the-art
digital film distribution network.
