Synopsis:
“Karoy”
is an emotionally powerful tale of cruelty, brutality, and forgiveness,
set against magnificent Central Asian landscapes that powerfully evoke
classic John Ford westerns. Beautifully shot on 35mm by one of Central
Asia’s most gifted young directors, Zhanna Issabayeva, “Karoy”
serves as an intense exploration of human morality. The film follows the
main character, Azat, as he walks through expansive, blighted landscapes
from one desperately poor village to the next. Azat is a modern day
Machiavelli who knows no bounds, from rape to robbery, horse rustling,
and slander, he makes his way in life through the misery of others. The
film then allows the audience to wallow in an orgy of violence, as Azat
finally gets what he “deserves.” As Azat slowly recovers from his
punishment we discover an entirely different man; beloved by nephews, a
blessing to his dying mother. Has Azat’s cruel punishment reformed his
spirit, or are there two sides to every soul? The director, Issabayeva,
never forces a moral message, but allows the audience to struggle with
the inner contradictions of a tortured life.
